The next U.S. president will face trillions in expiring tax breaks. While President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have shared early proposals, the federal budget deficit could complicate plans, experts say. Many TCJA tax breaks are temporary and slated to sunset after 2025 unless Congress passes legislation to extend them. "It's a massive tax cliff," said Erica York, senior economist and research manager with the Tax Foundation's Center for Federal Tax Policy. Here's why prices still aren't going downHowever, the federal budget deficit will be a "huge sticking point" amid tax negotiations, York said.

Vance, another potential vice presidential pick, and Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville joined Trump in the courtroom on Monday. Both Vance and Tuberville spoke to reporters outside of the courthouse and attacked Cohen, trying to undermine his credibility during his first day of testimony. Florida Sen. Rick Scott joined Trump in court last week, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton made the trip the week before. In the weeks ahead, more of Trump’s allies are expected to join Trump in court, according to a Trump campaign official. Michael Cohen faced a fierce cross-examination on Tuesday afternoon in the criminal trial of Donald Trump, as the defense tried to tear down the prosecution’s key witness. Mr. Cohen was repeatedly attacked by Mr. Trump’s attorney, Todd Blanche, who suggested he was being evasive on the stand, had selective amnesia and was a jilted former employee profiting off his hatred of the former president. Mr. Cohen, once Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer, has testified that Mr. Trump directed him to pay $130,000 in hush money to Stormy Daniels, a porn star, to suppress her account of a sexual rendezvous with him in a Lake Tahoe hotel in 2006. Mr. Trump faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to hide the reimbursement of Mr. Cohen. Mr. Trump, 77, has denied the charges and says he did not have sex with Ms. Daniels.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump has praised South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, who was once seen as a potential running mate and is now facing backlash over revelations in her new book that she shot and killed her 14-month-old dog. “She’s a terrific person,” Trump said in an interview with radio hosts Clay Travis and Buck Sexton that aired Tuesday. CNN previously reported that Noem had already fallen off Trump’s vice presidential candidate shortlist long before the latest controversy began. Mansfield said an Eras Tour proposal could be "really romantic" but urged couples to ensure their motives were deep. Make sure your partner would enjoy a public proposalAnother important factor to consider is whether your partner would enjoy a public proposal. Jaime Bronstein, a relationship therapist, said an Eras Tour proposal is a great idea if Swift's music has played a "significant role in your relationship." However, she added that it's important to check if a public proposal is something your partner would feel comfortable with. "If your significant other is more private or would prefer a more intimate setting, a public proposal at a concert might cause discomfort or anxiety," she said.

CNN —Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” is one of the first songs I learned to play on the violin. While his doctor’s notes were lost to time, scientists sequenced Beethoven’s genome from locks of his hair last year. Hulton Archive/Getty ImagesA new analysis of Beethoven’s hair has shown the composer experienced lead poisoning toward the end of his life. Tests revealed incredibly elevated levels of lead, as well as arsenic and mercury, in two of his locks, likely from drinking wine that was sweetened with lead. Researchers don’t believe lead poisoning would have been enough to kill him, but it could have contributed to the composer’s well-known gastrointestinal issues and deafness.

McDonald's is working to introduce a value meal in U.S. stores to help offset an increasingly challenging environment for consumers, two people familiar with the matter told CNBC. The value meal was first reported by Bloomberg News. The potential new offering comes at a time when low-income consumers are beginning to pull back on spending, particularly at fast-food brands. Mentions of low-income consumers on company earnings calls are at their highest levels in nearly two years, according to data from Bank of America. An initial proposal by McDonald's for the $5 value meal did not clear necessary hurdles, and additional details are now being discussed, according to a person familiar with the process.

President Joe Biden's top economic advisor on Friday laid out plans for the country's looming debate over trillions in expiring tax breaks enacted by former President Donald Trump. Several provisions from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, or TCJA, of 2017 will expire after 2025 without any changes from Congress. Those include lower federal income tax brackets, a higher standard deduction and doubled estate and gift tax exemption, among others. The Republicans' signature tax package also permanently reduced corporate taxes by dropping the top federal rate from 35% to 21%.

If you're weighing a Roth individual retirement account conversion, you could save on taxes by leveraging a limited window of time, experts say. Roth conversions transfer pretax or nondeductible IRA money to a Roth IRA, which kickstarts future tax-free growth. After you stop working, but before you start required withdrawals from retirement accounts, is "the sweet spot" for Roth conversions, according to JoAnn May, a Berwyn, Illinois-based certified financial planner at Forest Asset Management. Plus, many investors want to leverage lower income tax brackets through 2025 before provisions could sunset from former President Donald Trump's signature tax overhaul, she said. After a Roth conversion, you'll owe regular income taxes on the converted amount.
